This photograph features the beautiful star colours of Orion together with the brightest star in the sky, Sirius, or otherwise known as “the dog star” due to its location in the constellation Canis Major.
The wonderful blue star colour is preserved in this long exposure through the use of special photographic filters. Barnard’s Loop, a large loop of red nebulosity is visible around Orion. Sirius the brightest star in the sky is to the right. The photograph is orientated as viewed from the southern hemisphere.
